Brakes

We studied the Sonex single lever cable actuated drum brakes.  We had a couple concerns including the turn radius when taxiing.  Another issue is the hand switching during landing.  I am sure it works fine for some.  We decided to install pedal actuated hydraulic disc brakes.  We found a used pair of Matco brakes and the seller had the wheel assemblies too.  The braking ability and maneuverability should be great but you always need to be aware of the weight increase.  There are a lot of parts when you include the reservoir, the lines, cylinders, parking brake, fittings, and the bigger wheels.  Since we are building a taildragger we really wanted the turning ability.

We ordered the Vans RV brake pedals since they had a nice assembly.  Dan figured out a way to mount them in the plans rudder pedal weldment.  We decided to only install the pilot’s side but test fit the passenger side, notice the dummy cylinder part.  If we want to install them later it will be a lot easier.
